The accumulation of acid-forming particles on a surface. Acid particles can become air borne and lead to acid rain, snow, mist and fog when mixed with precipitation. Natural sources of acid deposition include volcanic activity, lightning and microbial processes. Anthropogenic sources are industrial processes and other pollution sources. Anthropogenic emissions of nitric and sulfuric acids into the atmosphere by smokestacks and fuel combustion cause acid deposition at twice the rate of natural sources and result in 2/3 of total acid pollution.
